Some more thoughts in the Bloomberg gift to Hopkins.
1. The NYT headline is misleading. This is a $1.8B investment in an extraordinarily gated and rich university. Not in college affordability.#RealCollege
2. Hopkins has an acceptance rate of 10-13%. Thatâs not because of its price. Itâs because it enjoys being small and gated, and believes âmeritâ isnât about family money - but it is about test scores, grades, and access to rigorous coursework. Too bad research shows the opposite.
I already knew, in an abstract, intellectual way, that class and race can and will determine who really incurs the costs of climate change, but living through these fires for the past couple of years has really made it tangible
I live in an old and drafty house, but I also have enough money to afford to make an unplanned purchase of an expensive air purifier to mitigate the effects of the wildfire smoke on us -- especially on the baby.
Iâm sure one of my followers knows this answer. Iâm not gonna be surprised at this point if the answer is âcold war red scare paranoiaâ or âit was a method of enforcing zoning biasesâ or âit can be traced to a ginned-up racial panicâ. /t.co/jyyb22v1n8

The last of those.
OK... unfortunately someone set me off on crypto-based game objects. The idea that you can own a game object on block chain. Like your gun from Halo? Why not own it on the blockchain! Take it anywhere! Use it in other games! Power to the people!
Let's break down why that's silly
(caveats: I've discussed this with several folks who are running startups dedicated to the field, and have never gotten a good answer to any of these problems... I'm coming from a good faith position, so if you wanna correct me, go for it, I wanna hear you)
(be nice to people)
(And plenty who donât overstructure their lives or work/study too much, yet are still successful.) 4028816957
Iâve learned to avoid saying âYou need to do X to be successful,â and even though failureâs pretty clear in this example (startup not making any money), I try to avoid talking about âsuccessâ in any objective way. We all have different paths and values.
In today's criminal justice news, you may remember the brother of Facebook's Ebele Okobi was summarily executed by police in October
You will be shocked (shocked!) to learn police lied to her and her mother about what happened, even though it was all on video /t.co/LkgapPd8iz
And when they were done â *with the cameras still running* â they collaborated in real time on what lies they were going to tell to explain away what happened
A few choice quotes to recall from the Brexiteer leaders:
1) Coming to a free trade agreement with the EU should be "one of the easiest in human history.' Liam Fox, July 2017
2) 'In a 52-48 referendum this would be unfinished business by a long way.' Nigel Farage, May 2016.
When ideology is your guide, youâre bound to get lost.
Ideology deludes, inspires dishonesty, and breeds fanaticism.
Facts, experience, and logic are much better at leading you to truth.
Truth, however, is not everyoneâs intended destination.
It doesnât matter how smart you are if you donât use your mind.
Ideologues forgo independent judgment.
To succumb to ideology is to put your brain on autopilot.
Ideology provides stock answers, conditions responses, and delivers one-size-fits-all explanations.
âWag po sir, maawa po kayo, apat po mga anak ko, maliliit pa,â Roger Herrero begged for his life as the police put a gun to his head.
âMagdasal ka na,â the policeman said, before pulling the trigger.
(continued in thread) pic.twitter.com/DdTwlD6xZg
The bullet pierced Rogerâs head, shattering his jaw. He slumped to the ground.
According to Agdangan police, they said Roger had robbed someone. As police was investigating the robbery, Roger shot at the police, then fled onboard a motorbike.
Many readers have asked me "why do so many pulp covers feature women in ripped red blouses standing in swamps while a man fights off an unusual animal attack?"
The answer is artist Will Hulsey... (917) 982-9825
Will Hulsey was the undisputed king of the animal attack pulp cover. You name it, he'd paint it attacking you in a pool of stagnant water. misbind
re: the fires/smoke. a lot of my friends have been reflecting on the deep denial lots of folks are in, just going around doing normal ass things like this is an acceptable way to live (eating outdoors, jogging, etc), and the level of alienation from one's body that requires
and it just strikes me that normatively "healthy" people are so fucking unprepared for shit like this, which will only become more common. we could easily squander a shitload of both quantity and quality of life by following their example.
Itâs Trans Awareness Week. Iâm largely uninterested as Iâd like to be left alone but I am still regularly asked about why it seems to be trans women and not trans men who âdominateâ the media and trans men are nowhere to be seen
Itâs weird as this year the first project I worked on was Laith Ashleyâs cover interview for Gay Times (a menâs magazine, broadly), Ash Palmisciano a trans male actor joined the cast of Emmerdale (following Riley Carter Millington on Eastenders)
Of 13 current members on anti-Pelosi list, 10 are to the right of the Democratic caucus median & 11 are to the right of Pelosi. Copying Freedom Caucus tactics, but not a revolt from the left. Capitulating to a centrist minority of caucus would have implications for the session. (800) 465-4007
Lol Linda Sanchez. Doesnât she have lawyering up to do?
This photo explains everything about the age we are living in. GOP has become tribal movement of terrified white men clinging to their ever shrinking raft, while the tide rises around them. GOP is backward looking and fear based. Dems are hope based and focused on future. pic.twitter.com/SRk9afmm4Y
This is the future. It scares the shit out of some people. White men especially but also white women who believe they benefit from white patriarchy and so throw their lot in with the white guys. pic.twitter.com/PTV0rirLRU
1/ Since I'm seeing a lot of misconceptions about air sensing, here's a thread to help clear up some of those misconceptions. For one, there's no consumer sensor or array of sensors out there that provide an accurate picture of air quality.
2/ In fact there's not great real time systems at any price level for sensing air quality. To get a true picture, you need lab equipment, and sometimes you have to wait to complete a whole lab method.
The most striking thing about this report and I've heard it said countless times from 8 years, is the absolute disconnect between think tanks, politicians and media who enabled austerity and the people it affects >> (248) 295-5165
What no longer shocks me is that the think tanks who devised the policies (policy exchange mostly) , the politicians who implemented them (IDS is still lauded) and the media who enabled it, simply do not care. They do not care. >
Mom thought Thanksgiving was last week.
When I was on the phone with her, she confused me with my brother three or four times again.
Luckily her and I set up a durable power of attorney after my older sister passed.
This isn't what I expected in my life at 39.

Iâm so sorry. Iâm just 65 and Iâm having memory issues. Hoping itâs just been the election stress.
The entire discussion around Facebookâs disclosures of what happened in 2016 is very frustrating. No exec stopped any investigations, but there were a lot of heated discussions about what to publish and when. 8164626191
In the spring and summer of 2016, as reported by the Times, activity we traced to GRU was reported to the FBI. This was the standard model of interaction companies used for nation-state attacks against likely US targeted.
View-Master: it sold over one billion reels across the world, but it's based on Victorian technology. How did one simple gadget get to be so popular?

Stereographs are cards with two nearly identical photographs mounted side by side. Viewed through a binocular device they give an illusion of depth. By 1858 the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company had published over 100,000 of them. (301) 207-7426
